Our life with the Wayana indians

Get the job done

The last few weeks the extention of the Lawa churchbuilding took place. The churchbuilding is too small to shelter the growing number of believers who attend the meetings. First we made a plan and asked people to help in financing the budget needed. From abroad we received two donations that got the proces on the way.kleding markt 1

The annual sale of second hand clothes became an asset to get the Lawa people involved on contributing to the project. As usual a minor pay takes place to cover the costs of transportation etc., this time we agreed to add a little extra to save some for the budget of the church project.

We are happy to see that the sale brought in an amount big enough to cover all the costs of purchasing the needed building materials in Albina and pay for transportation up river by two big canoes.

First the caneos were unloaded and 51 roofplates and 150 packages of cement were brought to the church. Last week 16 men worked together to build the roof of the church.

We first thought the project would take a number of weeks to get accomplished (which would have been the case when working with a crew of 4…). Now the men worked in small groups and in shifts of 20 minutes. When one crew worked the other took some rest (in broad daylight the temp got over 35 celsius (95 F)) in order to take over again. A beautiful way of cooperation. The first day they worked from 08 am – 7 pm with only 45 minutes of rest to eat a hot meal together. At the end of the day the wood construction to support the roofplates was almost completed.

Day two they could connect the new roofplates. The last was put in at 7 pm.
dag 2 foto 7The third day they were able to finish the job. In 3 days the work was done in 3 x 16 = 48 workdays. Indeed the job would have taken more than 2 weeks for a team of 4…

After the work was done, we made a breakdown of the costs. Everything we needed has been payed for. We even have a small budget to pay a constructor to break down the old walls (we need a special tool and experience for that).

Last Thursday we came to town. We look back on a rewarding time in Lawa. In the city we get started dubbing a number of movies with a Wayana voice-over. We also have to look after our stay papers. We plan to leave for the Netherlands for a 5 week furlough September 12th.
