Our life with the Wayana indians

Come over and help us

This is what the elders of Apetina said to the elders of Lawa last year July. Then 2 elders couples came over to support the leadership of the Apetina church.
Since Eastern this year big spiritual problems with a number of teenagers occured along the Lawa river. A team from the Baptist Union came from the city to support the leaders in Lawa. The elders of Apetina also were asked for help. They felt urged to go over and help, but… How can we accomplish such an endevour and who will supply the funds needed?
Last year we had a nice opportunity to fly in gasoline with MAF for a reasonable price. Now we knew why. We were able to supply gasoline for the outboardmotor of a canoe and make the trip with a number of elders from Apetina to the church of Lawa.
Last week Wednesday we left for a 3 day canoe trip. Friday afternoon 5 pm we arrived in Lawa safe and sound ( with an impression of the wooden seat in our backs and more…).
A lot of prayer with a growing number of people is dayly business now in the Lawa church. We joined right after we arrived and are in the process since then.
We witness many teenagers getting delivered from the evil powers bothering them. They change into the person God wanted them to be.
For our Canadian guests and for us this river trip was quite an experience. The power of the river. The beautiful nature. Learning how to keep sitting on a small piece of wood people call a seat…
The elders from Apetina left the village like the disciples did in Luke 9. Get on your way and expect the Lord to provide whatever you will need. Ok, they brought their hammocks and a few pieces of cassave bread, but that was all. They could live on water and cassavebread if need be. They trusted God would take care of them. The first day we enjoyed beforehand prepared anjoemara, the second day a squirrellike ‘meal’ swam by and was naturally caught and cooked. The third day we could buy, cook and eat fish alongside the river. This way God provided a nice meal every day. Very special to experience!
The past days we are praying, together with the elders of Lawa, Apetina and a lot of other people, with over 30 teenagers in serious trouble. We see how God is performing miracles in peoples lives.
We expect to be in Lawa for a week or two and then return to Apetina by canoe. This all depends on the situation at Lawa at that time. It is special to know that so many people all over the world are praying for the teenagers of this tribe deep in the jungle of South America.
